ViaSat to Deliver UHF DAMA Network Control Stations for NATO
CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct 08, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) has received a $14 million award from NATO for turnkey integration and installation of three UHF Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) Network Control Stations (NCS). Two fixed NCS sites will be installed to set up satellite communication channels for NATO operations in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other theatres within NATO maritime and ground component commands, and a third, portable NCS is intended to enable “quick-response” operations outside these areas to support the global mission of NATO. The two NCS sites and portable NCS are expected to be fully operational by fall 2011.

Under the terms of the contract, ViaSat will supply complete NCS systems, including its UHF DAMA NCS software, RT-1830 and RT-1829 UHF satcom terminals, UHF satcom antenna systems, and related RF, networking, and installation equipment. ViaSat is also responsible for full site integration and installation, including system architecture, site preparation, equipment procurement, test, and support. NATO is expecting the portable NCS, based on the ViaSat DAMA Channel Controller Trainer/Simulator, to increase NATO operational responsiveness to locations anywhere in the world.
“Our experience integrating and installing the global UHF DAMA NCS for the U.S. government allows us to offer NATO an advanced and cost-effective system,” said Dave Porter, business director for ViaSat Tactical Satcom. “Also, the portable controller allows NATO to use DAMA for efficient sharing of channels on satellites that are outside the coverage area of the two new fixed NCS sites.”
The NATO NCS program is a continuation of ViaSat global leadership and expertise in the UHF satcom market. It also sets the stage for future Integrated Waveform (IW) upgrades to the NCS, for NATO and other international customers that already own and operate ViaSat NCS equipment, including Australia, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
