ViaSat Named First ‘Recycling Champion’ of 2016 by City of Carlsbad and Coast Waste Management

CARLSBAD, Calif., - February 26, 2016-The City of Carlsbad and Coast Waste Management have named ViaSat as the first “Recycling Champion” recipient of 2016. The City and Coast Waste Management’s Green Business Program recognizes Carlsbad businesses for their exemplary recycling efforts each quarter.

“Thinking green and reducing waste is at the core of our corporate culture,” said Rick Baldridge, president and chief operating officer, ViaSat. “For us, it is about sharing in a social responsibility to make smarter environmental choices and maximizing every opportunity to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

ViaSat is a global broadband services and technology company. As part of its sustainability initiative and robust recycling program at its Carlsbad headquarters, which employs nearly 2,000 employees, ViaSat incorporates an employee-driven sustainability program which engages and empowers employees to reduce waste and increase the amount of material diverted from their waste stream.

Additionally, as a result of their sustainability-focused corporate culture and practices, ViaSat achieved ISO 14001 certification for its implementation of its environmental management system.

“ViaSat has a robust recycling program with maximum employee participation,” said Daniel Butler municipal affairs representative for Coast Waste Management. “As a partner to the City of Carlsbad, we are thrilled to recognize ViaSat for their outstanding efforts in sustainability. They are a model for green-minded businesses not only in Carlsbad but greater San Diego County as well.”

Nominations for the Recycling Champion are submitted by Coast Waste Management drivers from their respective routes based on several criteria including frequency of recycling and cleanliness of containers, meaning that no contaminants such as garbage is mixed in with recyclables.
